The National Parks of Canada on a Budget – Cape Breton National Park
The National Parks of Canada on a Budget
Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia
About: This is one of the parks that you really have to drive through to get a full idea of its beauty. Over 367-square-miles of Gods finest creations decorate this park, which stretches across the top of Cape Breton Island. Taking away the cost of petrol, this drive is in itself one of the greatest you might ever do.
The 66-mile section of the Cabot Trail is a real adventure flanked by ocean and forested highlands; it climbs to heights of 1,200 feet where you can look down on the whole masterpiece, twists around hairpin turns, and slivers down to the shore, threading in and out of the park boundaries and through picturesque small communities and fishing villages. To get the most out of this, think about taking a few days and maybe even bring the tents for some camping.
When to go: Definitely summer or autumn. Although there can often be bad visibility, the colours when at their peak are kaleidoscopic.
Wildlife: Moose on the roads, eagles in the air and whales in the water, they have it all.
Where to stay: The further you stay from the National Park itself, the cheaper. Camping is the most economical option and there are also some great B&B’s. Check out http://www.canadianrockies.net/services/servacco.html for more options.
Squeeze your dollar: For golfers, one of Canada’s best courses is out here at Cape Breton. You can get a round in for under $80 which is a great price for a top class course. They also have some great food at affordable prices. For more info on golfing in canada at affordable prices. For more info on golfing in Canada, go to http://www.golfcanadaswest.com/
