Moraine Lake – A Hike into the Blue

morraine Moraine Lake A Hike into the BlueMoraine Lake is not the kind of place to let rain interfere in its unique beauty. Aside from meaning I had to carry a few extra provisions on my hike, the damp spring weather hindered us not. Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14km outside the village of Lake Louise and is one of my favorite activities to do around the Canadian Rockies. Once you tackle it, it will likely be your favorite too. The thing that makes this lake special and arguably better than Lake Louise is that when it is full (best in June), it reflects a very distinct shade of blue due to the refraction of light off the rock flour on the Lake’s bed.

Enough of the science, let’s get descriptive! I was lucky enough to be staying in the Paradise Lodge and Bungalows which was both a great lodging and close enough that I didn’t have to get out of my warm bed too early! There are all sorts of options around Moraine Lake. You can go horse riding, picnic, relax or take the option I did which was hiking. It is much quieter than Lake Louise, although still a little busy during peak times.

The hike itself is not strenuous and there are plenty of points where you can stop off, relax and watch out for wildlife. Due to a terrible reliance on cigarettes, this stopping became more frequent as we climbed. (Is it too late for New Years Resolutions?!) Eventually we made it to the top and we were alone. The view from the rockpile at the peak was worth every step on the hike. We stood there until it became the soft rain became too cold and descending was the only option. The offer of renting canoes to go on the lake was open to us but enough energy was spent that we could return to the hotel ready for a bottle or three of wine and a warm bed! Moraine Lake must not be missed during your visit.
